Australian singer/actor Troye Sivan burst onto the music scene with his innocent-sounding yet anthemic vocals in powerhouse breakbeat-tinged hits such as his “Wild” and “Youth” singles in 2015. It seems a natural progression for him to pair up with Dutch EDM/pop super producer Martin Garrix who has loudly been building his own music portfolio with very noteworthy collabs in the pop and dance music spaces including everyone from world-class DJ/producers and fellow Dutchmen Tiesto and Afrojack to American R&B/electropop songstress Bebe Rexha.
The polished Kraftwerkian synthpop electronica of Garrix on the 2017 single, “There For You,” indeed provides an ideal space for Sivan’s sincere vocal melodrama to shine. “Last year took a toll on me but I made it with you next to me...around the world and back again...I hope you're waiting at the end,” emotes Sivan with passion and confidence yet still humbly retaining qualities of innocence, insecurity and introspection. Meanwhile Garrix manufactures his industrious electronic pop that merges smoothly with Sivan’s silky voice.
“There For You” majestically ebbs and flows as the song's verses and chorus ride calmly over its dubstep-influenced soundscape. It's breakbeat bravado and vocal solitude fusing nicely together here for a very up-for-it EDM light track nobly promoting solidarity and being there for someone through thick and thin. It's a message for the ages that's often sung about. “There For Me” polishes it off though and gives it a new sheen in 2017 with two artists whose stars continue to rise.
