Martin Garrix is at it again. This time he’s unleashed the dubsteppin’ “Scared To Be Lonely” track featuring rising Albanian vocalist Dua Lipa. Hot off the heals of chart-ruling hits like “In The Name Of Love” and “Now That I’ve Found You," Garrix uses his emerging tried-and-true formula of epic techno-infused soundscapes meshed with power pop vocals on his latest commercial single.
“Scared To Be Lonely” is a gorgeously haunting piece of electronica that puts Lipa’s yearning voice front and center, and unites it in harmony with the rugged trance-y breakbeats from Garrix. It's a sound that's come to dominate the FM airwaves these days with similar tactics being used by likes of radio-friendly EDM pioneers like The Chainsmokers. It’s also worth noting how “Scared to Be Lonely” does not go into familiar four-on-the-floor territory common to pop EDM. Instead, it chooses to reside in a more serene realm with great results, even daresay, going into a modern power ballad place.
Garrix and Lipa are yet the latest in the EDM dude and pop dudette pairings. Look at Kygo plus Selena Gomez on “It Ain’t Me," David Guetta plus Emeli Sandé on “What I Did for Love,” and Calvin Harris plus Rihanna on “We Found Love” just for starters. On “Scared To Be Lonely," the Dutch/Albanian duo bring out their own unique slant within this ubiquitous musical category and easily carve out a unique niche.
