When most people think of martial arts, they think of McDojos, people running around in pajamas, and rainbow-colored belts. With a good program, martial arts can mean so much more. Martial arts has improved many facets of my life as well as others who have stuck with it. Here are ten things that training in martial arts can give you too:
1. Patience
Martial artists often find themselves pushing their limits on just how long they can hold a stance or position. This test is of mental strength, the ability to do something that isn't necessarily what they want to do.
2. Balance
Martial artists seek out skill in balance, as the ability to distribute weight across one's body correctly becomes the key to a powerful kick or a strong punch. One's stance is like the roots of a tree, anchoring one to the ground and giving them stability.
3. Self-Control
Martial arts is about action, yet it is equally about inaction. Martial artists develop a skill for pulling a punch or picking the right moment.
4. Self-Confidence
A martial artist's confidence in knowing how to defend themselves is what gives them the ability to never have to use what they know. Instead of freaking out in a dangerous situation, a martial artist doesn't need to freak out and resort to fighting. Their confidence gives them the power to avoid ever having to resort to getting physical.
5. Humility
Martial arts is deeply rooted in the quality of humility. A martial artist will show respect where it is due, and will avoid inflating their own ego. They are trained to see their greatest enemy as themselves, and to fight to improve upon who they are constantly.
6. Kindness for others
Martial artists are trained to see beyond themselves, and to actively seek out what they can do for others. They will hear someone out, and will help a person in need.
7. Strength of mind
In martial arts, the goal is to push yourself just slightly beyond your limits. This requires tremendous mental strength, as it isn't easy to silence the body's pain with the power of the mind.
8. Strength of body
The physical training to master martial arts is rigorous. There is a focus on giving all parts of the body equal attention. Without strength-building, one can't expect to do an effective strike even if the form is perfect.
9. Peace of mind
A martial artist can rest a little easier walking down bustling streets. Even though they feel safe, they are still very attentive. Watchfulness is the key to avoiding most situations before they even become an issue.
10. Sick moves
It doesn't hurt to learn some sick moves too! Knowing how to do the perfect spinning back-kick or cross-hand hammer is just a bonus!
