With 48 miles of rail and 740 bus stops, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority is one of the most reliable and efficient ways to travel through the city of Atlanta. Many use it daily to commute to work, and others use it occasionally as a convenience to avoid heavy traffic. Either way, the ease that this system provides is a blessing to all residents in the general area. MARTA, however, only extends to a certain point, and those in suburban cities such as Johns Creek, Duluth or Alpharetta must travel a significant distance to benefit from the train. These residents still fight the GA-141 or GA-400 congestion regularly, but a single train station away from the traffic would greatly benefit a significant amount of people.
1. College students can come home more often
With stations at Oglethorpe, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and more, a MARTA station closer to home would allow these students to come visit home for the weekends more frequently.
2. Getting to work would take less time
For those who commute to downtown, getting to the North Springs or Doraville stations still takes over half an hour with morning traffic. A station outside of the traffic would greatly reduce their travel time, giving them more time with their friends and family during the week.
3. Easier access to midtown/downtown events
Whether it be sports games, exhibits or marathons, the lively city of Atlanta is always booming with activities. Parking and traffic is a nightmare on what should be a simple night out. A MARTA closer to home would relieve us of all these stresses.
While it may be true that the majority of these cities would not regularly benefit from MARTA, a single station that avoids the major congestion would be a great asset to the community.
