"One Tree Hill," the classic teen drama that was everyone's favorite binge-watch has taken a hit. Mark Schwan, the creator of the series, has been accused of sexually harassing multiple of the female cast members during the filming of the show.
Being the avid "One Tree Hill" fan that I am, this news was disappointing, saddening, and triggering all in one.
"One Tree Hill" had such a huge following and fan base, and to hear what might have been happening behind the scenes is a hard pill to swallow. Becoming invested in a TV series of such length makes you feel as if you are close friends with the characters, and hearing that they may have been hurt or assaulted is incredibly heartbreaking.
As stupid as it sounds, getting dragged through nine seasons of love, hate, and drama can make you feel like you are a part of their lives. What may have been happening to these characters when the camera wasn't rolling is troublesome.
Sexual assault on film sets is more common than people may think or hear about because of the publicity it can cause.
Some may not want to come forward in order to not draw press or drama to the hard work they put into the job. The world of Hollywood and film can be brutal as is, and actors and actresses probably don't want to ruin an image of a series or film by filing a complaint, which is the ultimate flaw.
"One Tree Hill" ended in 2012, which means fives years later this news is finally coming out. The cast members obviously did not feel comfortable enough to come forward until recently.
Sophia Bush, who played Brooke Davis on the hit tv series, said that the cast was often "psychologically manipulated" while on set. She stated that Schwahn often put them in unsafe and threatening positions both physically and mentally.
Schwahn took advantage of the vulnerability of these young actresses and how important their careers were to them.
These allegations and events will definitely force One Tree Hill fans, including myself, to reevaluate respect for its creator.
