As a high school student, I was involved in the marching band. I was a member of the colorguard section where I was a captain for two years. When I was deciding on a college, I looked for the best marching band. As a freshman in college, I was in the colorguard of the SUMB, and as a sophomore, I was in the mellophone section. This upcoming year I am continuing in the mellophone section. Here are some of my favorite things about being in a marching band.
Band Camp

"This one time, at band camp…" jokes are only funny if you've been to band camp.
Roll Steps

Once you learn, you roll step EVERYWHERE!
Walking (marching) in tempo to the songs you listen to…

whilst making sure that your left foot is hitting on the odd beats and right on the even.
Friday Night Lights are so much better in the band section
Or Saturday afternoons, either way, the band has more fun
“One more time,” is the biggest lie of your existence.

It's never just "one more time."
You learn very quickly to understand football.

If you don't understand football in any capacity, you'll learn some of the basics from being in band.
At the end of the season, all the blood, sweat, and tears were worth it.

Your show will never be any better than it is the last time you run it. Your band will never be exactly what it is at the end of the season. You and your friends have worked your butts off for three or more months to put together a 10 minute show. And it was all worth it. Every ache, every pain, every time you complain, every laugh, every victory, every run is worth it.
