Although I have never been the largest sports fan, I’ll watch the occasional basketball game; the Super Bowl, the Kentucky Derby, but that’s about it. Growing up in a sports obsessed family, you would think that I would have a passion for all aspects of the game. In fact, this environment has driven me away from watching sporting events on TV every second or every day, because honestly, I couldn’t care less.
That being said, when the month of March rolls around, my competitive, sports drive comes out of hiding. That’s because it is time for March Madness. The NCAA tournament is full of excitement, anticipation, and competitiveness. As it progresses, it turns into disappointment and frustration.
When going about creating what I hope will become the “perfect bracket,” I pick the teams with the higher rankings, throwing in a few “upsets” I believe could happen. Being the competitive person that I am, my friends and I have a pretty steady competition going on with all of our brackets. But we all know I’m gonna win this one...
Warren Buffett started his very own bracket challenge - promising $1 million a year for life to anyone with who guesses the winners 100%. We’re still waiting for this day to come. Celebrities, politicians, and more fill out brackets to share with the world. It’s exciting to have a look into Former President Obama’s picks.
March Madness brings together sports fanatics, casual observers and die-hard fans. Even those who have no affiliation to sports find themselves picking and choosing their teams - their champions. It leads to people cheering for teams to which they have no affiliation or connection. Yet, there is a sense of pride that comes with each bracket that is filled out. Millions of people fill brackets every year. Sure, some of it is for bragging rights among friends, or to make an attempt at the coveted "perfect bracket."
March Madness channels the beginning of spring, ending the winter blues. All of the emotion that come with the tournament are what brings it all the hype that it has today. But really, we watch these 63 games of the tournament because of our love of the competitiveness, and that's a beautiful thing.
Whether your bracket is busted or not, this highly competitive environment is a one you should keep up with. So cheer a little louder for those teams you know nothing about, and here’s to March Madness. It’s pretty fun even if you don’t care about sports.
