It's almost my favorite month of the year: March! It's the month of Spring Training baseball, the return of nice weather, and most importantly, the madness of the NCAA Tournament. If you have never taken in the enjoyment of the Big Dance, you do not know what you're missing. But before I get into it, let me just discuss another big sporting event that everyone seems to love: the Super Bowl.
Football is probably the most popular sport in the U.S., which explains why its final game of the season is a big deal every year. People treat the day like a holiday, having parties and spending time with friends and family. Everyone, even non-football fans, join in on the festivities. The commercials get just as much publicity as the game itself.
But then the game is over, and just like that it's over. The next day is just another day. The game is all of 3.5 hours. Once the whistle blows, the fun is over, and so is the season. But March Madness is different. March Madness is better.
First of all, it's more than a single game and a single day. It's an entire month of fun. It starts with the conference tournaments. Every team has a chance to earn a bid to the Big Dance. If a team can win their conference tourney, they're in. This leads to great games and the start of the tournament style of play. Win and advance, but lose and you are done.
Then comes Selection Sunday. This is the day of fate. This is the day that the next few weeks are built upon. Not only do we learn who's in, we learn who is playing who, where they are playing and when. The speculation can begin on when team A will have a chance to play team B, and with that comes one of the greatest things about March Madness: the bracket.
Filling out a bracket or two, or 10, is part of why March Madness is so fun. Like the Super Bowl, you don't even need to be a fan to partake. Anyone can fill out a bracket. You don't need any knowledge of any of the teams to fill one out. There are plenty of strategies you can use to pick which teams you advance in your bracket.
If you're a true fan, you pick the teams you feel are better based on what you saw during the season. Or maybe you like the team's mascot. Maybe you think they have cool uniforms or team colors. Maybe you go to one of the schools, or your boyfriend's cousin goes to one of the schools. It does not matter how you make your picks, because it's all about the fun of making the selections.
Once your bracket is filled out, you have several weeks of games to enjoy and root for the teams you selected. The first four games played on the Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday are just the appetizers.
On that first Thursday and Friday, round one features the two most exciting and fun days of college hoops of the entire season. There are 16 games on each day, and the games are on all day. When one finishes, another one has just begun. There are going to be multiple great finishes throughout the day, and once those two days of non-stop action are over, there is even more. The next two days give you eight more games each as well.
The fun just keeps going and going as the field gets narrowed down. With this the best teams will emerge, while other highly-touted teams will be knocked down in what are considered huge upsets. You never know what is going to happen in March. Finally, it all concludes with the Final Four and the championship game.
So who needs one day of festivities for a 3.5 hour game? I will take the month-long activities that feature non-stop fun and tons of basketball. It's more than a game. It features countless tournaments, a selection show, filling out brackets and then enjoying a ton of games. Each game will have an impact on your bracket. What's not to love?
March Madness and the NCAA Tournament are heads and shoulders above the Super Bowl when it comes to entertainment value -- they are simply so much fun over the course of an entire month (especially when your college has a chance to be part of all the fun -- go Monmouth!).
