Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke the record for completing the most touchdown passes in the game against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday night.
Manning threw an 8-yard pass to receiver Demaryius Thomas to complete the 509th touchdown pass of his career. With this touchdown, Manning broke Brett Farve’s previous record of 508 scoring passes. However, he didn’t stop there and continued to throw another passing touchdown, making his career total 510. The Broncos beat the 49ers with a score of 42-17.
Fans arrived at the game anxiously hoping Manning would break the record. As the game began, Manning needed two touchdown passes to tie Farve’s record and three to break it. Touchdown No. 507 was completed to Emmanuel Sanders and pass No. 508 went to Wes Welker. After the completion of pass No. 509, Sanders, Thomas and Welker engaged in a pre-planned game of keep away with Manning’s record-setting ball.
Alan Roach, Sports Authority Field at Mile High public address announcer, immediately alerted fans on Manning’s great accomplishment. “Broncos fans, you have just witnessed history,” Roach said. A pre-taped video tribute was also included that featured a video message from many Bronco teammates, Farve and Bronco’s general manager John Elway.
Despite four neck surgeries, Manning has thrown 110 touchdown passes for the Broncos since signing with the team in 2012.
So far, Manning is far ahead of the competition. Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints’ has completed 374 scoring passes in his career. Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots has a career record of 372 scoring passes and the New York Giants' Eli Manning has thrown 243 touchdown passes. Currently, Dan Marino stays in third place after Manning and Farve with a record of 420 scoring passes.
Farve congratulated Manning via Twitter.
“I’ve discussed with some family and friends recently that [I] certainly didn’t think this would even be a possibility a couple of years ago,” Manning said.
