Before You Leave For College, Make Yourself These Promises

Letting you know what I didn't.

Before You Leave For College, Make Yourself These Promises
Zach Chambers

If I could go back to pre-freshman year me and give myself a heads up of what’s to come, I would. So, listen up freshman!

College is awesome, but with this being your first time away from mom and dad, your friends, your small town, everything seems really intimidating. You can stay out as late as you want (no getting grounded for getting home after curfew), you can go anywhere without having to ask permission, and the freedom of making your own decisions is a huge relief off your shoulders because you don’t have to ask anyone besides yourself!

However, with this new lifestyle, it is possible to get mentally lost in it. With all of the socializing, parties, drama (yes drama is a thing in college) it is easy to forget why you are there in the first place: to get an education, and to find yourself.

Before you go to school promise yourself that...

1. ... you will never skip class for a dumb reason

Like you are too hungover to go, or simply just don’t feel like it. You are paying a hefty amount of money to be in college, so take advantage of it.

2. ... you will give yourself a mental break

Class and studying all the time can be overwhelming. Give yourself a little time each night to just chill out, and watch some Netflix before bed, or go on a late-night food run, just anything to keep those stress levels down.

3. ... you will work out

Yes, working out is boring and sweaty, but it is a huge stress reducer! (Also keeps off the freshman fifteen!)

4. ... you won’t get drunk 6/7 days of the week

Strategy: study two hours for every one you party.

5. ... you will be careful drinking

A good night can turn bad in the blink of an eye.

6. ... you won’t turn into a slut

People like this are everywhere in college. Your reputation will spread and a lot of people will know you for all the bad reasons. Have some self-respect!

7. ... you will join at least one activity your first semester

You literally meet your best friends here.

8. ... you will never settle

Fight for what you want and deserve (especially in relationships!) You can’t lose yourself within someone else, always remember you and what you want! If they aren’t willing to change, then it’s time to walk away!

9. ... you will have the time of your life!

Make the best of these years, because they fly by quick.

Just remember to party hard, and study harder. ;)

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
