Make Sure You Accept Yourself
Christine Savaiano

Make sure you are the right weight, not too skinny and not too fat. Make sure you have a flat stomach. Make you sure you have straight, white teeth. Make sure you have long hair. Make sure you have a fit body, but not too muscular. Make sure you look like this in order to be considered beautiful in society.

Three years ago, I would have told you that if I did not look like this I did not think I was beautiful or even somewhat pretty for that matter. My thoughts were toxic and I felt that the only way to meet guys and get new friends was to conform to societies beauty standards. Today's version of myself is appalled that those thoughts even entered my mind.

There are over seven billion people in this world which means that there are seven billion ways to be beautiful.

Acceptance.

This word means something different to each and every person because what one person thinks is okay another person might not. To me, acceptance not only means that someone has your approval, but it also means that just because someone is different than you, that does not mean that they do not deserve your approval.

Not everyone will accept you or give you their approval, but that absolutely does not mean that you should change. The people who do not accept you, do not deserve to have you in their life anyway and in the long-run, you are better off without them. I just recently learned the true meaning of acceptance and until then I was trying to change who I was and what I looked like to make sure that everyone liked and accepted me.

But the fact of the matter is, is that not all seven billion people in this world will accept and like you for who you are. Instead of trying to make yourself become a new person, make sure you are confident in the way that you live your life and most importantly make sure that you accept yourself.

Beauty.

The real question here is that is there a real definition of beauty? What truly makes a person beautiful? Beauty is not limited to what is on the outside appearance of the person.

Sure, someone might have long hair, straight teeth, and a clear complexion, but they could have a personality that makes you want to run the other way. To be beautiful is to love yourself, be confident in yourself and own who you are. If you carry yourself with confidence and have a personality that makes people want to stay, then you are beautiful.

Moral of the story? Make sure you are confident. Make sure you accept yourself. Make sure you are happy. Do not change yourself in order to be accepted by others.

If you want to change, do it to better yourself. You are one of the seven billion beautiful people in the world. Be unique and be yourself.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
