My first football game of college was literally so hot I couldn't even stand to be outside of the air conditioning. It was the sticky, sweaty, don't-even-look-at-me type of hot.
It was the "freshmen game" and a black out. They were giving out freebies like food and sunglasses. Before the game, the class of 2020 lined the edge of the end-zone, making a tunnel for the players. I went all out; I participated in the black out even though it was hotter than hell, used eyeliner for eye black, and wore a green sparkly ribbon in my pony tail.
I was sitting with a group of friends in the bleachers, including my now-boyfriend, Bryce, and my friend Sydney. As they called us down to line the field, I remember looking at Bryce and asking if we should even go down. There were easily 200 freshmen, and we were going to be shoulder to shoulder in the sun. I do not do well in heat.
We debated for a few minutes and then Sydney said something that has stuck with me for weeks.
"If we don't do this, we'll regret it later."
What a simple statement, but how true it was.
I live every day to take full advantage of every opportunity presented to me, regardless of how small it may be at the time, or how much of a task it may seem like at the time. Participate. Be present in every moment.
I would rather say "oh well" than "I wish I would have" any day.
I woke up this morning to find out that one of my best friends and another boy I went to high school with died in a car accident. He was speeding and flipped the car.
I remember staying up until 3 a.m. freshmen year smoking cigarettes, listening to shitty rap music, and riding around in the car with him and our friend Carley.
It's so sad.
But you know what? He was doing what he loved. Speeding in his truck, driving like a dumbass with his best friend. You bet your ass Damien would have been on that field.
Live without regrets, do everything with passion, and think "will I regret it if I DON'T do it?"
R.I.P. Damien.
We love you and miss you already.
