Over the past month, the hashtags #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #GiveCaptainAmericanABoyfriend have been trending. Let’s talk about that:
As a member of the LGBTQ spectrum, I absolutely agree that we need more LGBTQ characters represented in film and media, especially having them be main characters. However, I do find the intense push fans are trying to give to some characters is ridiculous.
Let me start with the Captain America case. As a big MCU nerd, this one irks me the most. In Captain America: Civil War, the movie makes it seem as though the plot is basically Captain America running after his old pal Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) and opposing a bunch of legal forces (actually, 117 nations, nbd) just to save him. Yeah, I agree that every time Steve looked at Bucky it looked like he wanted to kiss him. How Chris Evans portrayed his character makes me want to canon bisexual Steve Rogers. However, I am a firm believer that Steve’s heart lies with Peggy (and NOT with a certain kin of hers *cough cough*. Like that was weird, there was barely any chemistry there). For those of you who didn't know, the original, true-to-the-comics reason why there even was a Civil War was because Steve opposed the superhero registration because he believed it was fascist. Also, in the comics, Bucky ends up with Natasha (Black Widow) and their chemistry is amazing.
Besides, there are already gay characters in the Marvel universe. MCU should totally pick up one of those characters for their next big movie. Also, don’t forget that we got ourselves a pansexual Deadpool (thank heavens). It’s not emphasized, which isn’t always a bad thing. Remember that sexuality is just a normal part of a person. A plot shouldn’t revolve around someone’s sexuality.
Also, not everything needs to be about romance. We don’t need to have romance in every single goddamn movie. Platonic relationships are important and for some reason platonic chemistry isn’t enough for some people.
Now, I can get behind the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. Elsa is a new Disney princess and her story isn’t revived from an old fairy tale. Inspired from an old fairy tale, yes, but not copy and pasted. In Frozen, Elsa showed no interest in men, let alone love interests. Her sexuality was never defined. This gives us a window of opportunity. The sequel to Frozen should totally introduce a new character (another princess? Another girl with powers, maybe?) and have Elsa fall in love with her. To make LGBTQ fans really happy, the questioning of her sexuality shouldn’t even be discussed. Just treat the relationship or love interest as you would with heterosexual people/love interests. Alas, it is completely up to the producers of the Frozen sequel to decide weather to give Elsa a girlfriend or not. Idina Menzel, who (you probably know by now) voices Elsa, even said she’s totally down for it.
I understand that we, the consumers and audience, must demand our wants and desires, but I also want to respect the original backgrounds of characters that are being put on the big screen. Maybe Hollywood could actually write some original stuff more often and pen their own, new, and LGBTQ characters. That's not a shabby idea.
