Thus far, I've kept my opinions of the 2016 presidential candidates to myself. I've shared some particularly informative and interesting articles about the candidates, but other than that I've laid pretty low regarding the race. However, a heinous trend has been slowly but surely developing among a certain loudmouthed, notoriously racist and sexist candidate's supporters, and it seems imperative that I point it out for those of you who are unaware.
Donald Trump has been feeding into his supporter's frustrations and fears, and he has been using those negative emotions to breed a community of hateful, intolerant Americans with absolutely no compassion for those around them. There is a call for change in our government, and Trump has responded with overly-simplistic, spiteful plans to "make America great again." Perhaps the best example of this behavior is the fact that he encourages his supporters to be violent, sexist, and racist.
If you don't believe me, here are the top eight times he has blatantly encouraged hate and intolerance.
1. He told his supporters that, "part of the problem and part of the reason it takes so long [to kick them out] is nobody wants to hurt each other anymore," during a speech at Peabody Opera House.
2. He said, "I'd like to punch him right in the face, I tell you," referring to a protestor at a rally in Las Vegas.
3. While talking about protesters, he instructed his supporters to "knock the crap out of them..."
4. ...and then followed that comment with "Just knock the hell—I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise."
5. A Black Lives Matter protestor attempted to interrupt his rally in Birmingham, and he became involved in a physical altercation with several Trump fans.
Trump's reaction: "Maybe he should have been roughed up, because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing."
6. While Trump was president of Trump Management Corporation in 1973, the company was sued by the Justice Department for discriminating against people of color.
When the case was settled two years later, he was required to send a list of all vacancies to a civil rights group and to allow their applicants to have first priority. Three years later, the Justice Department sued the company again for continuing to discriminate.
7. In reference to Mexican immigrants, he declared "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best...
"They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
8. He blamed people of color for the majority of crimes being committed in this country (without providing any evidence to support his claim) in a single, horrifically racist tweet:
It's important to note that this is by no means an exhaustive list. Unfortunately, Trump is the source of a seemingly endless spew of racist, sexist, and hateful quotes.
