It is honestly shocking that the reality came true that Donald Trump is the Republican presidential nominee, and it's even scarier that a lot of people are on his side despite the fact that he has made fun of everyone in his path and spewing blatant disrespect to the Republican party that is reluctantly hosting him. Not to mention his crazy and irrational ways he would handle basically any situation that America is thrown into. I think it is safe to say we have all thought about what desperate measures we would take if, and only IF he actually became President.
Luckily, something extremely unexpected just happened in the US presidential election: A Republican congressman said he would vote for Hillary Clinton:
Richard Hanna, who represents New York’s 22nd congressional district, announced he would vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in November. He’s the first sitting Republican member of Congress to endorse her. The congressman wrote in an op-ed in The Syracuse Post Standard that he differs with Clinton on a number of policies but that Trump "is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country." He also stated, "While I disagree with her on many issues, I will vote for Mrs. Clinton." https://twitter.com/ABC/status/760699695228420096
Why is this such a big step for Hillary Clinton?
Well, Republicans, especially those in Congress, are not fond of Hillary Clinton. Many of them collectively wanting to discredit her career and ruin her campaign. But with everything going on with Donald Trump, politics have changed, making everything and anything very unpredictable.
In an editorial published on Syracuse.com, Hanna wrote, "I find Trump deeply flawed in endless ways. A self-involved man who is worth billions yet is comfortable — almost gleefully — using bankruptcy laws to avoid the consequences of his own choices. A man of character would not defend his actions but rather display shame and or at least regret. He is unrepentant in all things. Think about those average people who paid for his choices."
Even though Hanna stated that he has many disagreements with Hillary Clinton he has more faith in her ability to be President than Trump. This endorsement comes during a tough week for Trump, with strong criticism from all angles, including from other Republicans like Sen. John McCain and President Obama and more recent criticism about Women.
Many Republicans are known for stating they would not support Trump, or won't vote at all, depending on the next couple months as their votes might be on the table. Some moderate Republicans either already said they’d vote for Clinton, or signified they would consider it. This is a huge stepping stone for the Hillary Clinton winning over Republicans.
This is how badly some people don’t want Donald Trump to become president; they’d vote for a candidate from an opposing party.
