When we first get to college, everyone tries to make friends with the ice breaker "What's your major?". This exact conversation happened in one of my classes the other day. The student asked the girl a couple seats away from me what her major was and she replied back saying she was an English major. After hearing her response, the boy proceed to laugh and say "good luck with that major what are you going to be a teacher?". Responses like this are a problem. I am in a major just like this and it is not fair. What makes a one major better than another? And also what makes someone think their allowed to bash someone else's major? Major shaming is not okay and needs to end.
Everyone is passionate about different things. Some people like math, others like art. Nothing is wrong with following a career based off of what you are passionate of. People always tell you to follow your dreams but when you do they tell you it is not a good career choice. Every job in our society cannot function without another career. People who need help with writing papers go to english majors for help. Yet, you make fun of them because you think they can do nothing other than be a teacher? And what is wrong with becoming a teacher if that is what they want to do?
Every persons story is different. Sometimes, people can fail when it comes to their career choice. However, you never hear about the psychology major who actually made it or the english major who did more than sit behind a desk. You only hear of the cases where they fail. This can happen to a law student just as much as a psychology student. Everyone has the power to succeed and people should not try and stomp on others. We all need to work together to support each other rather than rip each other to shreds. Once we learn to support each other, we can end major shaming once and for all.
