Everyone has something they find truly interesting to them. Whether that is engineering, biology, art, dance, or anything you love, you pursue it because you enjoy it. If there is something I have learned it is to do something you love. Nobody wants a job in a field they won't enjoy and unfortunately, that happens sometimes.
Ideas about which major to choose have tumbled back and forth in my head. My two main ideas were either pre-vet or English as a major. Then, when it came down to it, I knew what I wanted to do was help people.
Science and math are not my strongest subjects and made me realize that a career as a large animal vet was not the way to go. Then it was English, but what would I do with an English major? Be a teacher? Maybe write a book? I had no desire to be a teacher only because it was not the setting I saw myself in and writing a book was possible but I am no JK Rowling. So that leaves you, the one reading my article, to ask why did I choose psychology. Well let me tell you that there are two main reasons that I choose to major in psychology.
1. It does not get boring
The field of psychology to me never ends and there are so many areas of study. I personally find abnormal psychology truly intriguing. You're given a case and you are there figuring out why and how the mind functions like this and what is the best way to help someone suffering with a disorder. Not only do you get to study the human brain, but you are helping someone in the process.
2. The feeling of helping others
In the field of psychology, you are helping people in many ways. Not only this, but you are helping a wide variety of people as well. Children, adolescents, adults, veterans, and more.
These two reasons are the two main reasons why I choose this. I have also decided to minor in crime, law, and society. My hope is to one day work with veterans with PTSD. I have always had a real heart and mindset of helping others and I am always eager to go to my psychology classes. I am excited about my classes in the future and am looking forward to eventually get a job that will challenge me, give me different cases, and help me help others. If I could give any advice I would say figure out what you want in life and what you love.
