As the first semester of my freshman year comes to an end, I've started to think of all the things I've done here at Samford. I joined a sorority, got involved with student government, also got involved with a campus ministry and I've made many caf creations.
But as I start to make plans for the summer I realized there are so many more things I want to do here in Birmingham. Here are a few things I've already done.
1. Picnic at Railroad Park.
Not all will say this is the heart of the city, but it has become one of my favorite spots on a sunny day whether with family or friends.
2. Get a cookie from Insomnia Cookies (late at night).
The best part about having a sorority function downtown is that you're close to Insomnia. A cookie and/or ice cream is the best midnight snack.
3. Get a "break up" cookie from Church Street when you aren't going through a break up.
There is never a wrong time for a cookie, but if the drive downtown to Insomnia doesn't seem thrilling, head over to Church Street. It's become one of my favorite study spots, and their cookies are the best.
4. Pepper Place Farmers Market.
I love Pepper Place so much. From the sweet tea that's worth $10 to the flowers that are so pretty. You can never pass up an early morning at Pepper Place in the fall or the spring.
5. Skates 280.
Although I mainly stand along the edge, Skates 280 is a lot of fun and very affordable.
Some amazing memories have been made, but I am always hoping for new memories with more friends. Here's a list of things that have made it to my Birmingham Bucket List but haven't been checked off.
1. Birmingham Zoo.
I have so many fond memories of going to the Atlanta Zoo, and I'm sure I can make some more at the Birmingham Zoo too.
2. Try all the barbecue restaurants.
Between Jim n' Nicks and Saws BBQ, it's a hard decision but there are even more BBQ places in Birmingham. Welcome to the south!
3. Go to a Baron's game.
Lucky for me, I get to do this in just a couple of weeks with my dad. Baron's games are affordable and fun, so grab a few friends and go watch some baseball.
4. The Vulcan.
I know what you're thinking. How has she not been to the Vulcan and she's in her second semester at Samford? Well, it's on my list.
5. Oak Mountain, Red Mountain, Moss Rock.
Get outdoors and hike because Birmingham has a great city and a beautiful surrounding area with great scenery.
I can honestly say that my list can go on and on of both things I've done and things I hope to do. But if you can check off everything I've listed above, I am proud of your accomplishments and hope you never stop being adventurous. You should definitely check out some of the historical places like the Alabama Theatre and The Civil Rights Museum. Birmingham has a lot to offer so whether you're a Samford student or not, you should stop and see the sites.
