If I had a nickel for every time somebody said to me “I hate cats” or “dogs are so much better than cats,” I could afford daily Starbucks drinks. It has become clear to me that the cat haters are usually one of two things: allergic to cats, or never owned a cat/are relying on stereotypes.
If you are allergic and can’t go near them, my condolences to you. But if you are mildly allergic or fall under the latter category, I hope you can keep an open mind for these wonderful animals. Here are a few of many reasons why loving cats is way easier than you think. And to illustrate the reasons, I present to you my own cat, Calvin.
1. Cats look surprised at literally everything (and it’s super funny)
They're always on the lookout, and their faces show it!
2. Curiosity won’t kill the cat, it’ll kill you (metaphorically) with its cuteness
They're used to their routines, so when something new enters their life (like fresh flowers on our kitchen table), they must explore!
3. They make lovely cuddle buddies
How could you not want a fluffy friend to cuddle with? After all, they sleep 16 to 20 hours a day and need somewhere to do it!
4. How they sleep is interesting, to say the least
I mean...
5. If you like photography, you’ve just found the purrrfect model
Need a muse for your photography portfolio? Or maybe you just enjoy taking pictures? Look no further! They're super photogenic.
6. They appreciate everything you do to keep the house nice
If you clean the couch, put down a new rug, or wipe the windows, they'll be sure to make use of the changes and show you how much they appreciate it. Here Calvin is excited about the freshly trimmed bushes by the windowsill.
7. Last but not least, having a cute, furry creature around makes for a happier you
I can't make this stuff up—studies show that having a pet to love, hold, and play with lowers stress levels and bring smiles!
Sure, cats have sharp claws and teeth and independent personalities, so it’s easy to dismiss them as evil little hoodlums. But when you get the opportunity to bond with one of these furballs, don’t take the chance for granted. They are wonderful companions and some of the most hysterical animals you could meet.
So, to those who won’t go near cats because of allergies, previous bad experience, preference of dogs, or plain-old being a hater, give whiskers a chance. As Sir Sigmund Freud once said, “Time spent with cats is never wasted.”
