10 Things Every Louisvillian Can Relate To When Attending The University Of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky may have thousands of students that attend it from Lexington, but there is a sizable number of people on campus that grew up in Louisville, and they permeate every corner of the University. From Greek Life to SGA to DanceBlue, it seems like so many of the organizations at UK have students from Louisville involved in them. While we may know that our water is superior and Churchill Downs is arguably better than Keeneland, we did all choose to attend the University of Kentucky. And so, here are 10 things every student at UK can relate to if they call Louisville home.

Constantly seeing people you know, everywhere you go

It feels like every time you walk across campus or sit in Willy T for longer than 15 minutes, you run into someone from Louisville.

Getting asked “Where did you go to high school” immediately after saying your name when meeting someone new

Downtown Louisville

Instead of asking where you live, people ask where you went to high school. That's just how it is.

Only being a little over an hour away from Louisville, but it feeling like 6 hours

One of the best parts of calling Louisville home is the fact that your college is not too far away. However, Lexington feels like a completely different world.

People mispronouncing the word “Louisville”

Louisville sign

No, it is not Lo-e-ville.

Being asked why you don’t have a southern accent

UK Students

Just because we're from Kentucky doesn't mean we sound like it.

Being asked “Why didn’t you go to the University of Louisville?"

Memorial Hall

This question can be answered in a variety of different ways, but the most definite answer that we can all agree on is this: Go Cats.

People are always surprised when you say that in high school, you got an entire school day off in order to watch a horse race

Oaks is one of the best parts of being a Louisvillian.

Actually kind of missing the tap water in Louisville

Louisville

And having to just accept that the water in Lexington is sub-par.

Bringing home your college friends who aren’t from Louisville to fun events like Forecastle Festival, and getting to show off your city

Louisville is just so much fun.

Knowing that while Lexington may be your home for 4 years, or more, Louisville will always be your hometown

And being more than okay with that.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
