We hold power.
We have a fire burning within us,
Waiting to continually spark and set ablaze our purpose.
The only charge we need is sleep, food, and love.
the power cord sitting next to us takes this power away.
When was the last time you decided to spontaneously adventure? Or just drive no where with your windows down? Or write a friend a letter? Or take photos to print for memories instead of post to Instagram? Or just not use social media for a day?
I'm just as guilty as you. I wake up and scroll on my phone for about 10 minutes. Walk to class and do some more scrolling with some strolling. Get to class, scroll some more hoping the teacher won't notice me staring at my crotch. This goes on all day until I go to bed. My phone is the first thing and last thing I see at night. Not even my boyfriend or God. A stupid (but expensive) piece of plastic holds so much power over me. It's pretty sad actually.
As we are reading (somewhat) irrelevant BuzzFeed articles and comparing ourselves to others, we are forgetting to simply think for ourselves.
We are numbing our mind by living through another person for a split second, to only live through another person. We are forgetting we have our own life to live! We are losing our power to contemplate life, be creative, be present, and be spontaneous. We are selling ourselves short. We are worth more than likes and shares. We have so much more to share than a twitter post. We have ourselves to share--our ideas, our love, our presence.
So readers, I challenge you, go one day without social media. Just one day, you can do it I promise. We can go like seven days without food, so one day without social media won't kill us right? With those empty moments where you would pull out your phone, simply think and be present. Notice the trees or the people around you.
Notice how much free time you have. Use this free time to add to the fire within you--write someone a letter, go on a 10 minute car jam to nowhere, pray. Just be and know that silence sparks moments of growth. Being is often better than doing.
Finding your own power often means taking away power from the power cord. So let's work on charging our minds and hearts instead of our phones.
