We have become such forward thinkers that we are missing out on days and weeks and months of our lives. This is a tragedy, a plague that has become an epidemic in our everyday lives, simply because we build up so much anticipation for a single moment that when it passes by we are left desperately disappointed. Moments are just that, moments. They are fleeting and beautiful but over in a single breath. We are viewing our journey in terms of events, 2 months until I graduate, 3 weeks until I start my next job, 4 years until I get married, and so on. We are counting down constantly, and inadvertently in doing so, we are counting down the days until we don't have anymore. What a terrible way to exist! But can we even help it?
Can we take each day one at a time, each breath, each sight and sound, all as small miracles that we are lucky to experience? Can we stop hating the time that is passing and instead embrace each minute as an opportunity to grow? Can we take a moment and look up from the world we have in the palm of our hands to see the beauty that is real and all around us? Can we stop dreaming about things we never really think we can do and instead make an effort to achieve something new and wonderful? Can we stop worrying over the days ahead and work on the present task at hand? Can we put that much effort into the here and now?
It's possible. I know it is, because we come from a history of greatness. We are born from developers, entrepreneurs, explorers, innovators, leaders, and all around great men and women. Are we going to let their legacy die in our state of preoccupation with the what-ifs, the fears, the doubts, the cowardice of the culture we have developed? It takes work, and that is what I believe we have lost. We have succumbed to a world where things aren't as hard to get so we have forgotten what it looks like to put blood, sweat, and tears into our goals. We are limiting ourselves because we haven't been forced to think or to even be wrong. How will we ever learn?
When are we going to take back the reins? When are we going to stand up for what we believe in without fear of offense and make a change? We are not all so different but if we hold onto the belief that we can't coexist then we are going to make that our reality. We are living a life of fear even if we pretend we aren't. The future is just as uncertain as it always has been but now that we have seen that nothing is guaranteed we can't stand the idea of confronting that fact, but we aren't living. So, I dare you, myself, our generation to be present and to be bold, because if we are so concerned for our future, we need to do something now to make sure it is a future worth saving.
