"Friends who want to stay friends don't discuss religion or politics"
Honestly I think that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. Friends are those who you should be able to speak about whatever. But in today's world that appears to be less and less possible.
Disagreement seems to be a common factor, "Oh we're not going to agree on X,Y and Z so why bother bringing it up?" Disagreement is the basis of how things are fixed. The problem comes if the disagreement comes on "important" issues.
"We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist."
I'm fine disagreeing about how to fix healthcare issues in this country. Obamacare is nowhere near perfect and needs tweaks. What I am not fine disagreeing about is essentially taking it away from those who need it most.
I am not fine with people condoning behavior of someone in office who refers to my people as, "The blacks." I am not fine disagreeing about whether we should be normalizing hate and violence.
I am fine with people trying to figure out how Trump won, it truly was an eye-opening victory. I am not fine with people ignoring that it and most things have anything to do with race. No one has articulated an ACTUAL difference between the wants and needs of the black working class vs. the white working class (It's not that hard trust me.)
With that being said I am not fine with dehumanizing Trump and those who support him. Accepting one's humanity is not the same as accepting that their positions are valid.
I am not fine with disgreeing why blacks are still being targeted by hate crimes, and not just in the south, as California reported, 333 race-related offenses were committed against African-Americans
I am not fine with disagreeing that white nationalism is becoming more and more prominent (for recency see KKK rally in Charlottesville).
Disagreement is ok, it really is. But if you're going to sit there and say that there aren't glaring racial issues and turn the other cheek then that is not ok. If you are truly a friend, an ally, you will not ignore the problems of the ones that you "care so much about."
Voter suppression is becoming more and more apparent, but you care more about the "sensitization of America." Climate change is being pandered as basically a hoax, but you'd rather scream, "liberal news source who cares?" Right now the senate, majority republican, is drafting a mostly secret bill with a CBO score saying it will hurt millions more than it will help, but you cry "the institutions have liberal agendas! Between them and intelligence agencies out to get Trump, we can't trust anyone!"
While this is a free country, there is still a long way to go.
