Long Hair: A Love Story

What struggles?

Long Hair: A Love Story

As someone who had a bob in high school and grew it out in college, I can attest to the preference of long hair over short. You always hear about the struggles--and sure, there are plenty--but we hardly ever discuss the perks. I mean, so many women grow their hair out for a reason, right? Here are my favorite parts about having long hair:

1. You don’t even have to do anything to it

I wake up and go to school without even brushing it more times than I’d like to admit.

2. But if you were to style it, anything is possible

Curl, straighten, wave, braid, seemingly impossible Pinterest tricks--literally anything.

3. Messy buns and high ponytails are especially fool-proof

I can actually plan to wear my hair up to school or an event instead of resorting to it last minute because nothing else looked good or I woke up late.

4. You don’t have to wash your hair everyday

My roommates and I keep track of how long we can go without washing it. I won’t tell you the results because it might gross you out, but you can’t even tell it’s been that long! It’s also a lot healthier for your hair, and it gives you more time throughout the day to do other things.

5. But when you do shower, it’s an excuse to stay in longer

It’s admittedly very difficult to leave once you get in, but when you have a mile of hair to wash and condition, the longer you get to put it off.

6. Fewer haircuts

I know everyone says you have to trim it regularly to help it grow--and you should--but it’s a lot less work to maintain the style. Much cheaper, too!

7. Your hair is less affected by weather

It’s easier to protect from wind or rain by tucking it into your jacket. But, even if you couldn’t, it still remains basically the same, just maybe a little tousled (not a bad thing).

8. Well, wind is a pain--unless you’re walking against it

You kind of feel like a model. It’s nice.

9. You may shed everywhere, but it’s a nice reminder of all the beautiful hair you have!

Sometimes when I sweep and create a hairball the size of my head, I want to puke. Then a few seconds later I’m grateful I even have all this hair to shed (this may be a stretch--I’m just a generally optimistic person).

10. Everyone wants to play with it

You don’t even have to ask, people just offer. And the answer is always an enthusiastic yes.

11. The compliments

As someone who isn’t very fond of receiving compliments, I don’t mind the ones about my hair. I’m like, “Yes! Thank you! I grew it myself.”

12. It’s quicker and easier to cut hair than it is to grow it out

If you’re itching for a change, it’s a lot easier to cut your long hair than it is to grow your short hair out. And there are no awkward lengths once you reach a certain point.

13. If you spill something on your shirt, it’s easy to cover up until you get home

Same with holes! And it usually works no matter where the blemish is located.

14. One word: mermaid

To be honest, letting my hair float in the pool is something I mostly did when I was younger, but it’s still nice to know I have the option.

15. You’re easily identifiable

You pretty much can never get lost. Someone will always find you.

16. Extra warmth in the winter

This is more important than it sounds.

If you have short hair, I’m sure it’s beautiful and amazing and certainly less heavy--I used to have short hair, after all--but you’d have to pay me a lot of money to get rid of my long locks now that I have them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
