Last week was the annual MTV VMA's. I don't typically watch award shows, but I wanted to hear Kesha's speech which left me in tears, as well as the rest of the performance. The song that was performed was 1-800-273-8255 (the national suicide hotline). Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid did amazing, as I expected, but what I didn't expect was to see suicide survivors lined up on stage.
At this point, I was already in tears. The reason I was left speechless was that no one talks about suicide and how prevalent it is. Logic wrote a whole song about it and sang it on national television that millions of people were watching! He showed how serious it is and how important it is to talk about.
Teens and even adults contemplate suicide every day. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24, 4 out of 5 teens and young adults who commit suicide give clear warning signs. There is no reason it should be that high. People shouldn't brush off others who want to confide in them. We should always be there for each other regardless of race, sexuality, gender, etc. We are ALL human and most of us suffer without anyone knowing it.
Schools shouldn't discuss suicide after someone has died from it. They should discuss every mental disorder from the beginning. Everyone is important, regardless of how big or little their problem is. We should take more time to evaluate everyone's feelings. Talk to someone if you are feeling suicidal.
