Chances are you’ve heard Logic’s new song, 1-800-273-8255, and may have mixed feelings about the lyrics. Sure, the beginning lines are depressing, which is the point. However, if you choose to continue listening until the end of the song, you will realize the powerful message behind the lyrics.
In my opinion, this tune is right in every way. For starters, the title itself is the number of the suicide prevention lifeline, fitting for a song about this exact topic. Let’s break it down: the song begins with Logic talking about being depressed and wanting to end his life. The tone then shifts to a slightly more positive note of the singer choosing to stay alive. By the end of the song, Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid have expressed that suicide is not the answer, and it is worth it for everyone to stay alive. Similarly, the video tells the story of a teenage boy who realizes he is in love with another boy, and his family is not supportive of this. Distraught, he discovers a gun and contemplates suicide. Fortunately, he does not follow through, as there are scenes showing an older version of the teenager with a family of his own.
Simply put, 1-800 is a song about suicide prevention. The artist’s emotional performance at the VMAs in August helped bring much needed attention to a serious issue in our society. Hopefully, more singers will follow his lead to destigmatize this topic.
Mental health is a highly stigmatized topic in the media and everyday life. Some celebrities have made the courageous decision to publicize their struggle, but have done little to actually support people who live with mental health issues. Logic’s release of this song and the accompanying music video and powerful live performances has helped break the barrier between the media and mental health. In fact, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has reported a dramatic increase in people reaching out to them since the release of the track.
As a young artist, Logic’s audience consists primarily of teenagers and young adults, who have the highest rates of attempted and completed suicide attempts. Given that the music video features an LGBT+ teen, it can be expected that the rate of teen suicides, especially among LGBT+ teens, will decrease, and resultingly, the number of people seeking help will increase.
Additionally, men are much more likely to settle on suicide, rather than getting help, in comparison to women. As a generalization, men are not as comfortable talking about their feelings. Males often feel that they need to maintain a “tough guy” reputation, and that they can’t cry or appear vulnerable. Logic teaches that these feelings are normal for everyone and shouldn’t be hidden.
For me, having a hit song in September about suicide prevention is so critical, given that September is national suicide prevention month. If people as influential and famous as Logic, Khalid, and Alessia Cara can stand up to suicide, so can you. My hope is that 1-800-273-8255 will start the conversation. One song can’t solely destroy the stigma, but it shows that the topic doesn’t need to be a taboo one. Having someone with as powerful a voice as a celebrity catches people’s attention and makes them more likely to take the advice. Thank you for being the ones to make the difference.
Regardless of age, this song shows everyone that suicide is not the answer, and you are not alone.
