I’ve spent a decent amount of time in locker rooms in my life. I had gym class pretty much every year that I was in school, and played sports for most of my life. I still go to locker rooms now in college after I’m done at the gym. Every locker room is different, depending on the age of the guys there, the location of the locker room, and what you’re there to do. Despite the differences, there’s always some sort of interaction in the locker room. Let me tell you about some of my experiences with “locker room talk.”
1. Middle School Locker Rooms
This is where a lot of boys are first introduced to locker rooms. Gym class and school sports bring us all together in the awkward, smelly, and crowded cavern tucked away in the bowels behind the gym. What do we talk about? Well, mostly nothing. We’re all trying really hard to not look at each other because of our embarrassment over our pubescent bodies and to avoid being teased for being gay or weird if we watch another guy dress. Sometimes, when we do talk, we talk about how we heard that one kid in our grade tried pot, or about someone’s fake girlfriend in Canada. We don’t talk about sexually assaulting or raping anyone.
2. High School Locker Rooms
By this point, we’re fairly used to the whole locker room thing. We’re more comfortable with our slightly less awkward bodies, so the conversation flows, especially if you have gym with any of your buddies. There’s a lot of trash talk, teasing, wrestling sometimes, and throwing things over the lockers at other guys fairly often. We talk about the people we’ve had sex with, or been shot down by, parties we’ve gone to, drugs we’ve tried. Our conversations can get raunchy sometimes, and are normally making fun of someone or something. Even with all this talk about sex, even with our raging teenage hormones, we don’t talk about sexually assaulting or raping anyone.
3. Adult Locker Rooms
Adult locker rooms bring back the silence again. If you work out with your friends, you’ll talk to them, but normally quietly and talking about things no differently than if they were anywhere else. If you’re there alone, you probably aren’t going to talk to the other people in the gym, especially the naked elderly men that are always out in full force in gym locker rooms. A wide range of things may be discussed, but we don’t talk about sexually assaulting or raping anyone.
So, a lot of things are said in locker rooms. Sometimes it’s profane, a lot of the time it’s sexual. But I’ve never heard anyone brag about sexually assaulting anyone. It certainly isn't something common and completely accepted by all parties involved. So, what kind of locker rooms has Donald Trump been in?
