It honestly was disgusting watching this video.
Although our town of Grand Junction, Colorado is one of the most conservative places on the map, (in my book) I wouldn't expect this outrage to be so demanding, naive and mean.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that completely. But when you yell at someone for simply not speaking the same language as you, your opinion is almost contradicting itself. What about when your family wants to go vacation on the beach in Mexico? I doubt you'd take the time to research their culture, let alone learn their entire language.
With that being said, this woman yelling about whatever sparked her fury, obviously hasn't done her research. Did you know that in 2011, "58.9% of Latinos 16 and older were employed"? Not only has that number undoubtedly increased since then, but that number proves that Latinos make up over half of the labor force in the US.
On top of yelling at another human being because of their ethnicity, this woman chose to do so in front of her child. One, including me, might argue that this is what our children are learning today. As a society we talk about growing as communities and evolving with social justices, but this example is doing just the opposite.
For me, this video rubbed me the wrong way. I have a brother in-law who is Mexican. He speaks Spanish as his first language and was born in Mexico. Just because he speaks a different language or has different skin pigmentation than me, doesn't mean he isn't a good person, father, husband and brother. In fact, he's been in my life for longer than I even remember, and has taught me different things about the world and life in general. I respect him immensely for the hard work he does to provide for his family and the impact he has had in my life.
This video goes to show just what people try to ignore in everyday life. Discrimination happens REGULARLY. Not only to African-Americans, but to all people of color. Watching this video started a fire in me to help stop these things from happening, and I hope it does the same for everyone.
