Just last week, the "Lizzie McGuire" movie celebrated its 13 year anniversary. Feel old yet? I do. The "Lizzie McGuire" movie was released in theaters on May 2, 2003. That’s right—it was not an original Disney Channel movie like most people think it is. It was the first movie Disney made based on a Disney Channel television show. Since the "Lizzie McGuire" movie was so famous and loved by viewers, the movie made millions at the box office. And, it became a permanent staple in our Disney collection. I still have the "Lizzie McGuire" soundtrack and I have no shame in admitting it. My love for the Lizzie McGuire series and movie will never die.
The "Lizzie McGuire" movie marked an end of the "Lizzie McGuire" and Hilary Duff dominated era of Disney. However, it is still a movie I love to watch and the songs are so catchy. After graduating middle school, Lizzie McGuire and the majority of her classmates go on a school trip to Rome, Italy. Like how much money did this school have? Can I go on their trip to Rome? You would think that the trip would be nice and boring, however, Lizzie gets mistaken as an Italian pop singer and gets persuaded by a cute Italian singer, Paolo, to impersonate her for one night. Lizzie gets thrown into the life of a pop singer, all the while, still enjoying her trip to Italy with her friends. However, like Ethan says in the movie, they needed to eat more spaghetti in Italy because why not? She even gets to meet her Italian doppelganger, Isabella, who in actuality was Hilary Duff in disguise. I have a feeling that people thought Hilary Duff had a twin for the longest time because she played the part so well...that and the magic of Disney editing.
The "Lizzie McGuire" movie had such a great soundtrack of songs that enhanced the fantasy of being a celebrity while being set in the beautiful city of Rome. “What Dreams Are Made Of” was my jam in elementary school. If you pretend to not know at least 50 percent of the words, you are clearly lying. Everyone knows at least the chorus and/or some of the dance moves. If you want to test your knowledge of how well you know the lyrics, BuzzFeed even made a quiz: You’re welcome.
The character of Lizzie McGuire was so relatable to a lot of people, hence why people are still celebrating the "Lizzie McGuire" movie anniversaries. Lizzie was just as awkward and funny as we all hope to be. She even had a nice but crazy family and such supportive and friendship goal relationships with Miranda and Gordo. Basically, every preteen girl wanted to be Lizzie McGuire. However, a free trip to Rome was not included in our fantasies. A girl can dream though.
Although the "Lizzie McGuire" show was only two seasons long, it will forever be in the hearts of those who grew up in the 2000’s. Is it too much to ask for a "Lizzie McGuire" reunion? Only time will tell. Until then, re-watching the "Lizzie McGuire" movie and singing along to the songs will have to do.
