Growing up I was always on the floor, in tears, or both when it got to THAT time of the month. I kind of always figured that was how everyone felt, but when talking with my friends and mom, I knew I had to see a doctor. A few blood tests later I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It turns out it is actually much more common than you think, especially if you're someone that'd never heard about it like me. I was soon put on birth control which is the main treatment for the condition. However, it isn't an end all be all solution and I definitely still feel some symptoms.
First off, thank the lord for birth control. If I was not on it then I still would be on the floor all the time. The worst thing, though, is that you usually have to try out a few/more than a few to see which birth control is best for you. Therefore you can say goodbye to normal hormones. Birth control can really suck at some times as well because some kinds produce certain symptoms. These can include, but are not limited to: acne, nausea, dizziness, weight gain/loss, headaches, the list can go on.
Also, going along with what the name of the condition is, come cysts on your ovaries. They are not anything to worry about but they are very painful to have, especially when they rupture. And honestly, there isn't much you can do about them unless it's a super bad one and your doctor recommends to remove it.

Finally, everyone always says how much their period hurts and to suck it up. It isn't like the flu where it can go away and you just miss a few days of class. When it is that time of the month and you'd rather be in bed with a heating pad, you know you have to go to class. Not to mention every other girl on the planet bitches about her period and how you aren't the only one, even if your symptoms really are bad.
Thankfully, I have some pretty great doctors and I am much better off now then I was when I was first diagnosed. Although PCOS does affect my quality of life I just try to make the most of the good times as possible and that's pretty much all you can do. To my girls out there with this condition as well, stick it out. I know it sucks but we are all together.
