For every follower of God, there will be a time when we are led astray. There will be times (yes, plural) where we fall off the path that God has set forward for us and we try to stumble along our own journey. For those of us who have done this (I'm assuming most of you), we know how this journey ends. It generally ends in heartbreak and running back to the Father looking for comfort. At the end of the day, we are really all children, no matter our age because even in our adult life, we are constantly learning from our mistakes and having to return to God apologetically. No matter how old we get, this will never go away.
As much as we try to do the right thing, we have a sinful nature as human beings. Though we can do everything in our power to avoid messing up, we will still continue to do so. I think, however, that the most unfortunate thing about this is that sometimes we follow God with an uncertain heart. Sometimes, we are caught in the middle of wanting to follow God's plan, but also leaning towards wanting to follow our own path. I've been in this position so many times, and it is honestly the most painful feeling when your conscience tells you what is right but you continue to go with what feels right at the time.
The Bible tells us many times that the only way to live a happy life with God is to totally submerge ourselves with His grace. Proverbs 20:4 warns that "those too lazy to plow in the right season will have no food at the harvest." As disciples of Christ, it is extremely important for us to follow God totally and completely and not stray.
In today's society, this seems like an impossible thing. How can I join a sorority, fraternity, social event, go to a party, whatever the case may be, and still be totally focused on God? How can I invest my time in one thing and still be focused on Him? As a college student, I know I've been in this position many times. I've been caught in between wanting to live my life for myself and wanting to live my life for God.
What I've learned is that God will prevail in the best parts of your life. The choice to have fun and live for God doesn't HAVE to be a choice. It is still possible to live life for Christ and be in aversive environments. You will find your place in college, and it may not necessarily be where you initially imagined yourself. If you follow with an avid spirit and the best of intentions, you will certainly notice all of the parts of your life where God is present. Overall, happiness will be more evident in your life, and this I can promise.
