Living In The North Vs. Living In The South

Nine lifestyle differences when comparing the North and South

Living In The North Vs. Living In The South

I am in New York City for the summer. If you have ever visited the Northern realm of states as a Southern belle, you might have been slightly confused when ordering your food. The same can be said if you are a native of the North and decide to visit the land of Southern hospitality.

Essentially they have the same things but just variations that may, or may not, throw you off when your server comes to bring you a side of mustard. You also might be thrown off be the forms of transportation, as well as your choice of soda.

Check out all the things that continually have thrown me off since I have arrived in the Big Apple from the ATL.

1. Tea

If you are up north and order an iced tea, it has no sugar in it. It serves no purpose at all as they expect you to use Sugar in the Raw packets to help give the tea life. Southern states completely dose their tea with sugar though. Want to cheat the system while in NYC though? Head to Chick-Fil-A and get your fix!

2. Mustard

Most diners and such already have ketchup and mustard preset on the table for your convenience. However, NYC diners have spicy brown mustard while diners in Atlanta have yellow mustard. Both are delicious but it always throws me off guard.

3. Honey Mustard

I know this might seem like it does not make a difference, but trust me, it does.

4. Public Transportation

Public transportation is the non-existent. Marta, the Atlanta-based train transit, only has four lines in comparison to NYC's subway system having 26 lines.

5. Soda

The biggest rivalry of all! Honestly, Coca-Cola is huge in South as its hub is in Atlanta. Because the North is so diversified, I am not sure that there is a crowd favorite. However, most places do not carry full lines of either beverage, so that sucks.

6. Fast Food

There are a million McDonald's in NYC but barely any other fast food options! I literally seen one Wendy's and one Burger King. I am not even sure if the peeps in the city know what Taco Bell or Arby's are!

7. Fried Chicken

Where is all the fried chicken hiding up north? In the south, we live for chicken that has been fried. Hence, our addictions to Zaxby's and Chick-Fil-A.

8. Clothing Trends

So many things to discuss here. Northerners love all black outfits while Southerners cannot help but wear salmons and reds and oranges and bright blues all summer long. Patterns are even more fun!

9. "You guys" and "Ya'll"

This sure is something that catches people's attention! Ya'll is only used in the South. Period.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
