Living On-Campus Was Fun, But I Won't Miss These 10 Aspects Of It

Living with a bunch of other people is fun, until it's not anymore.

Communal-style living is something every college student should experience. It's a prime setting to learn respect, sharing, and how to compromise with people outside of your family. However, as someone who grew up with three older brothers, I was completely unprepared for living in a tight enclosed space with another girl.

Living with a bunch of people seemed like fun.

Until it wasn't anymore.

With that being said, I am so excited to MOVE OUT of my dorm and into an apartment with my best friend. Dorm life was great, but I certainly won't miss it. In particular, I won't miss:

1. Blatant disrespect of other people

Seriously, the girls on my floor have deliberately disregarded the requests of our RA multiple times. We are 19 and 20-years-old, so I don't know why people are acting like children and not respecting the fact that other people live around them.

2. Having to get ready as quietly as possible

I love my roommate, but it's hard to get ready in the morning because our schedules don't match up. She always has to tip-toe while I'm sleeping, and vice-versa.

3. The laundry room

My building was not blessed in the laundry department. It's on the first floor and the other half of the building. I won't miss having to lug my laundry basket down through the lobby and praying I don't lose a pair of underwear while I'm walking. One room for 20 floors, come on!

4. Drunk. Girls. At. 4 a.m.

"Like, oh my god!!! Shhhhhhh!" and then there's a collective laughter from the hallway. I've been the drunk girl. And then I was on the other side. I won't miss it.

5. When people don't flush the toilet

This is absolutely disgusting. I get it, everyone forgets once in a while. But when you're living with some 20 other people, try to check before you leave because nobody wants to see your bloody tampon in the toilet, which, by the way, you're not supposed to flush in the first place.

6. People who try to talk to me at 8 a.m.

I just woke up. I want to be polite, but I can barely comprehend what you're saying. So please don't try to hold a conversation with me while I'm brushing my teeth and half-asleep.

7. When I need to pee, but the bathroom is closed off

I got lucky this semester, my bathroom is closed off and cleaned before I wake up. But I remember the struggle last year and I'm so happy I don't have to face that ever again. I used to think my bladder was going to burst.

8. Listening to other people's music in the shower

I hate country music. Not sorry. I know there are people that don't like my music either, so I won't miss feeling guilty for playing mine, and I won't miss being forced to listen to some EDM artist or Blake Shelton.

9. Hair that's all over the shower

Clumps of hair all over the floor, all over the walls, all over the drain. You're absolutely disgusting and a terrible human being if you leave your hair everywhere in the shower and don't clean it up.

10. How hard it is to get alone time

I, like most people, get drained when I'm around people for too long. When you live in a dorm you're always around people. It's nearly impossible to get alone time, so I look forward to having my own room again.

Living in a dorm was definitely an experience. But, I did my time and I'm ready to be a free woman again.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
