Adulting is hard, there’s no question about that. There are no breaks from reality, and for some, the everyday hustle of bills and busyness can seem daunting. However, it doesn’t have to be. I’m not saying there is an option for ignoring these responsibilities, but there is a way to “funify” them, if you will.
If this newfound adulthood is hitting you hard, here is my advice. Ask yourself one simple question: are you doing what you love?
If not, are you at least pursuing something you’re passionate about?
We are only given one shot to fulfill all of our aspirations and goals in life. It’s crazy to think that I’ve spent nearly twenty years just hanging out and getting to college. It seems as though I’m just now realizing who I want to be and what steps I’m taking to get there. My experience with this has given me two mottoes.
The first is never pay a bill if you don’t need it.
Being in college automatically means you’re poor. Even if you’re bathing in money, trust me, you’re poor. It is a trap for adolescents who aren’t financially responsible (and still difficult for those who are). That being said, every time you’re faced with the potential of adding a new bill to your list, question why you need it. Is it going to help you reach your goals? Are you passionate about the benefits you’d be receiving?
For example, as an equine science major, the only bill I currently pay for is my horse’s board. I don’t have Netflix, Hulu, or anything like that. I’m not saying you shouldn’t, I honestly miss Netflix, but in the end, I was wasting way too much time on it and not working on any of my goals.
You obviously do not have to go to that extreme, that’s not the point I’m trying to make. I just want to let you know that there are 24 hours in a day; are you spending them working on things that are actually helpful to who you want to become?
The second motto I live by is “to live or to exist.”
Again, you are only given one shot to navigate your way through life. Do you want to live it to your fullest, or simply exist? Who you are is a mosaic of all of your favorite things, people, and memories.
Be sure to surround yourself with an environment that motivates you to work towards a life you love.
