Robert Brault is famous for his quote that says, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”

It’s easy to take advantage of everything life has to offer, but that doesn’t mean we should. When times get tough, our minds may focus on the negative things instead of remembering the positive ones. Especially in the overwhelming and busy world we live in, simple things are often hard to relate to and remember.

Taking time to have gratitude for the small things will bring you happiness. Instead of focusing on things that are annoying, hurtful or frustrating, practice gratitude for the little things that make you happy.

We’re often told that bigger is better, but this is not always the case. Some of the most wonderful things in life are the “little” things. To put this into perspective for you, I created a list of some of my favorite “little” things that bring me happiness.

  1. Laughing so hard your tummy hurts
  2. When winter turns into spring and the flowers finally begin to bloom
  3. Being greeted by your dog when you walk in the door
  4. Waking up to a snow day
  5. Receiving a package
  6. Driving with the windows down
  7. A new outfit
  8. Your favorite quote
  9. Cuddling with the one you love
  10. Conquering a fear
  11. A spontaneous trip
  12. Long hugs
  13. Getting out of work or class early
  14. Making someone smile
  15. Surprises
  16. Bubble baths
  17. Feeling confident
  18. Falling asleep to the sound of rain
  19. Watching the sun rise or set
  20. Stargazing
  21. Deep conversations with people you care about
  22. Making other people happy
  23. Smelling your favorite perfume
  24. Getting into a bed with fresh sheets
  25. Listening to a song for the first time and realizing it's your new favorite
  26. Crossing the last thing off your to-do list
  27. Laying in the sun
  28. The sound of waves crashing on the shore
  29. The smell of fresh-cut grass on a summer day
  30. Having someone you care about ask you how you’re doing
  31. Waking up next to the person you love
  32. Reminiscing about good memories
  33. Receiving flowers
  34. Listening to a song you loved and hadn’t heard in years
  35. Birds chirping
  36. Random acts of kindness

Although these things might seem “little,” they gradually paint the big picture of life. It’s important to be mindful of the smaller details of your moments. Doing so will allow you to be present and further appreciate everything else in your life. All it takes is being aware of the beautiful little things and your life will change for the better.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
