I want to have a little talk about a growing fad in the social media world: Instagram modeling. Urban Dictionary so humorously (and quite accurately) defines it as "Girls on Instagram who photoshop ALL of their pictures, wear pounds of makeup and have 250k followers. They claim they're models."
Their accounts are filled with selfies, sponsored ads, and professionally edited photographs of themselves. When I first came across an Instagram model a few years ago, it didn't seem to be much of a big deal. Some people really do make money through modeling, and using social media to promote their career didn't bother me and still doesn't to this day.
However, as social media has progressed and technology usage increased by a massive percentage, so has the rise of the "unprofessional" Instagram model. They fill your feed with pictures of themselves, usually taken by their own friends who want to practice their photography skills.
We see them standing on bridges, sitting under bridges, posing in front of graffiti walls, walking on railroad tracks, chilling casually in old cars, running through fields of flowers, hiking in forests, and resting on beaches with the waves just barely hitting their perfectly polished toes.
Photography is art, and that is something that cannot be denied. It takes skill, equipment, and a subject. Without a subject of some kind, photography is nothing. Social media can also be an art form. However, is it possible for this art to be taken too far? Can one post too many pictures of themselves? And how is this affecting the rest of the world who scrolls through Instagram on a daily basis?
We get that you're pretty, but you also probably don't even look like that in real life. I can see that you have a perfect waist and a peachy butt. And yes, you clearly have an unrealistic amount time on your hands that I wish I had too. But for real, do you need to post about it every single day? Congrats, you're going on another photoshoot. Wow, what a cute little coffee shop you're visiting. Did you grow the corn in that cornfield yourself?
But actually, it's really been annoying me lately. I mean, I don't know, am I wrong?
Instagram modeling is no way to gain friends, just meaningless followers and personal groupies who will comment on your every picture because that's just what they do. Be beautiful, but don't flaunt it. Post an occasional picture of yourself if you really want to, but don't caption it with something totally unrelated to the photo. Wear cute clothes and make that winged eyeliner look sexy, but don't be a fake who lives for likes on Instagram. It's bad for your self-esteem and annoys the crap out of most of us.
If you need me, I'll be on my phone hitting the unfollow button.
