Light up a candle! It's good for you

I have an unhealthy candle obsession but there's actually research behind why lighting up a candle is good for you.

Light up a candle! It's good for you

There are actually benefits to this aesthetic. I know that many people light candles just because, but candles are actually something that you can benefit from. I wish that I could have candles with me in my dorm at ASU, however, coming home every weekend and lighting my favorite one has proven to be the highlight of my weekend.

So how are candles good for you? Well, let me tell you...

They bring focus

That's right! Now you can buy a whole lot of candles because of this simple excuse. We all know that good-smelling candles can calm you down and give this aroma of relaxation. Well, they can also help you focus. Smells like mint, lemon, orange, rosemary, and cinnamon can direct your mind into relaxing and focusing on the task at hand. So don't forget to have a lot of candles on your desk while studying.

Candle smells bring you memories

Ever get really sad one day and burn a specific candle? Or go in the grocery store, smell a bunch of candles, and find the one that makes you go "wait, oh my god smell this." Candles, or scents specifically, can trigger your brain into thinking about memories. Our brains love to associate things with certain smells. That's why when you smell brownies it makes you happy, or when you smell someone's cologne/perfume it gives you comfort. Candles work in the same way and I personally think it's cuter when a candle you light has a purpose to bring you a memory. So next time you give a gift to someone, maybe think of what candle smell reminds you of them.

The calm in the flame

Looking at candle flames make you feel calm. Try this: go get a candle, light it, and look at the flame. I hope you feel a bit calmer than you were earlier. The low light of the candle in our sight is sent to our brain and our brain begins to make our body more relaxed.

Anxious? Maybe try a new scent

Candles come in a variety of scents and especially for me, I light a candle when I'm feeling anxious or stressed. Some key scents to consider while feeling anxious are lavender and apple. Lavender relaxes the body while apple controls anxiety. I personally love apple scented candles and they are my favorite. I would definitely give this a try if you have an exam coming up (and if you can have candles depending on staying on campus or not.)

They're literally just cute!

I think the most important reason on this list is that candles are just cute. They are cute for decor and to feel a change of season with seasonal candles. I don't think that there's anything wrong with having a cute candle sitting on your bedside table or desk because it most definitely makes you happy to look at. They are cheap too! It's a cheap and easy way to decorate plus you can use it later. What more do you want.

Seriously! Go and light up a candle :)

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
