I have worked in retail for over three years now and sometimes I really think people don't hear themselves when they talk. Let me just start by saying that I work for a corporation. I have absolutely no control over what kind of product we sell, what sizes we sell, or how much anything costs. I show up, I follow the rules, and I do what I am supposed to do so that I can get paid just like everyone else. I get no satisfaction out of telling you that we do not carry your size. I honestly do feel bad when someone asks for a certain size and I have to tell them that we do not sell it in our store...but it's not my fault. Please don't attack me for it.
This has happened to me more than once, twice just last night while I was at work actually, and it has happened to many of my co-workers as well. It usually goes something like this...a person walks up to me at work and asks if we carry a 2XL. I then explain to them that we no longer carry that size in the store, we only carry up to an XL but we do have more sizes online if they would like to check there. Most people are perfectly fine with this answer, they thank me for making them aware of this, and continue on with their day...while others go on to accuse me personally of discriminating against them because we do not carry their size.
First of all, as I explained before, I just work here. I have absolutely no control over what we carry in our store. I am in no way discriminating against you. You asked me a question and I answered it. I am just doing my job. Second, the average person would not get upset over this. People just simply don't shop in stores where they know that the clothes aren't going to fit them. They just buy their clothes somewhere else that is more appropriate for them. This would be like me walking into the children's store, Justice, and accusing them of discrimination because their clothes don't fit me. Their clothes shouldn't fit me! Their target customers are children and pre-teens, not adults in their early twenties.
And then comes the part that really makes me angry...this doesn't happen all of the time but it has happened to me enough for me to point it out. The customer will then say something to me like, "Oh, I guess I can only shop here if I look like you." Excuse me? What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this statement? I gave you an answer that you don't like so now you're trying to make me feel bad about how I look? This has even happened to me over the phone when the customer can't even see what I look like! I have had a customer on the phone say to me, "I bet you don't wear that size." Why does it even matter how big or small I am?! I am in no way trying to attack you because of your size so don't attack me because of mine. I refuse to feel bad about my body because of you so you may as well save your breath.
If you really want our customer service number to call and make a complaint then I will give it to you, no questions asked. Please don't act like I personally walked into the store, grabbed every single article of clothing sized above an XL and threw it in the trash because I don't want you to shop here. I honestly don't care one bit what size you wear. It does not affect my life or my opinion of you at all. You should also not care one bit what size I wear. It shouldn't affect you at all either! Yes, I do fit into the clothes that I am selling...why should I feel bad about that? We are all human, we are all built differently, and different stores have different target customers which determine what kind of clothing they sell and what sizes they sell. That's just how it is, it's really nothing worth getting upset over. I am not in any way discriminating, I am just trying to do my job. I will not judge you by what size you wear, I will judge you by how you treat people.
