There is a lot of joy and happiness that can be found in the big things. In graduations, in success. In the addition of new family members and finding a new job. The big things are what we remember, what are declared to be the defining moments of our lives. But what about the little things?
What about walking around barefoot? Your toes squishing and curling into the nice, cool earth. What about waking up in the morning to the sound of birds? A soft ray of sunlight peaking through the window, the start of a new day. What about the scent of fresh-cut flowers? Their vibrant colors brightening up even the most dullest of spaces, making anywhere and anyone infinitely more approachable. The laughter of children, a stranger's smile. The soft, warm fur of a pet. Walking through your neighborhood, your lips sealed shut, ears free from headsets, replacing the usual drone of music with the usual drone of life. The smell of freshly baked pastries. The feeling of lightness whenever you put your computer down after a project and realise that you're done. Laying on a hard, cool surface, hearing your spine crack with relief as it flattens itself out. Laying on the grass, looking at the clouds. Looking at the stars. Looking at the stars and realizing how small you are, how meaningless your existence is in the eyes of the universe, yet still so meaningful to the ones you love all the same. A hug from a friend. A pat on the back from someone you admire. Being able to let go of your past and live for the present. Downing a cool glass of water. Jumping into a pool in the summer and stepping into the bath in the winter. Smiles, laughter, joy. These are all little things we experience on the daily. All little things that we forget to mention when looking back on our lives. It's the big moments that we remember the best, and the little ones we look back on with smiling vagueness.
The future cannot be seen. Try as you might, life will never go as planned. So do not live for the big moments, expecting for them to come. Instead, live for the little ones, the ones that fill your life with joy without doing much at all, because beauty is everywhere. Little things are easily found. So live for the little things, and relish in the big ones and know, that no matter how hard you try, no moment's ever meant to last.
