The 6 Most Important Life Lessons I Have Learned In My 21 Years

21 years old. For some, that seems to be so young, and for some, like my students, it seems to be so old. However someone sees me, though, I have accumulated many life lessons in my time here on this planet, and these are the ones that I have found to be most important for myself, and I'm putting them out into the world to share with you!

1. Get lost in nature somewhere

St. Thomas

Getting lost in the world around us can be so healing for the body and the mind. I have been the most healed from the pain put upon me when I go out in my hammock and find a place in a tree to just sit for hours, thinking about whatever I needed to. So go get lost in a tree somewhere, you'll be surprised how much positivity it can have on you.

2. Spend as much time with your grandparents as possible while you still can

My Papaw was just one of my amazing grandparents

Grandparents are such a blessing, and mine were and are nothing short of angels. Some of my fondest memories from my childhood were my weekends spent with my grandparents. I am lucky enough to still have most of mine, but that's not to say that I haven't lost those near to me. I miss my Papaw and my Grandma so much every single day, but I hold the memories I made with them close to my heart, and I cherish the time I still have with my Mimi, Appy, and Grandpa.

3. Fur babies make life more worthwhile

Love my Finny and Jaxi boys

I have lived my life both with and without pets in it, and I can without a doubt say that having pets makes life so much better. I have had my cat since I was 5, and now that he's 16, I look back on all the years that I have curled up with him at night and I know the day that he crosses the rainbow bridge, I will lose a part of myself. My dog Finny brings unconditional love and laughter into my life and I couldn't find a better dog. My fur babies make my life filled with love.

4. Your siblings are your built in best friends

My little Marshall Man

I didn't know what love I could have for someone until my brother was born. Since then, he and I have been as close as can be. The older I get, the more I realize that he is my best friend and my closest confidant (besides momma bear of course lol). He really has become my built in best friend. As cliche as it sounds, we really are siblings by chance, and friends by choice.

5. Your parents become less your authority figures, and more like your best friends in life

Love you Momma and Papa Bear

My parents and I have always been close, and that was only intensified as I have gotten older. While they have always been there to be my protectors, they are now my best friends too. I call my mom at least twice a day and tell her about anything and everything. I wouldn't be anywhere without them.

6. Never be afraid to be unapologetically yourself

You have been put on this planet to be yourself. There is only one of you on this planet, and no one will ever be exactly like you. Embrace who you are, because we only have one life to live on this planet, and you might as well enjoy it while you can.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
