13 Life Lessons Taught By My Younger Best Friend

Who knew that being younger meant being wiser?

Some life lessons are better learned once you've experienced them. Then you need to shamefully be reminded of them for years to come. Luckily for me and anyone who has a best friend, they're the one to constantly remind you of things you should know but don't often follow along.

Having a younger best friend (and yes, I will say she's younger because of the five-month difference) means they watch you make stupid decisions in life, only to be there to say, "here's something you shouldn't do." It's like having a younger sibling but better because your best friend wants to help you grow, not watch you self-destruct while laughing hysterically in the background.

These are 13 life lessons my younger best friend has taught me. Charlotte, hats off to you for the life advice.

1. "Just shut up."

Short. Sweet. To the point. If only I could keep my mouth shut when I drink, or go out, or simply exist, I'd keep myself out of a lot of humiliating situations.

2. "Don't record anything that you wouldn't want your mom to see."

This will forever be the golden rule, and though it should be the number one life lesson, it's second because it's always my second thought after I've opened a can of worms.

3. "You don't need that next drink."

As if I didn't already know this, but sometimes it's nice to hear it coming from someone else. Especially when it's the person trying to get me home in one piece.

4. "Don't text him back."

I need to be reminded to stop giving in so easily and texting back at lightning speed. Got to give these boys something to fight for, or maybe just cry in the corner if they don't text me back.

5. "Read your messages out loud BEFORE you send them."

Sometimes, things sound WAY worse when they're said out loud. I definitely should read all of my texts out loud in different voices so I can hear how terrible they sound before I hit send.

6. "You need to go to class."

If I had a dollar for every time I've gotten a text with those exact words, I'd have enough money to pay someone to go to class for me.

7. "You need to do groceries."

Apparently, you can't live off of Hungry Howie's pizza and Vale for the rest of your college career. I am shocked and upset.

8. "You need a filter."

Not just a filter for my face and photos, but a mouth filter to catch all of the crap that comes out.

9. "You can't cuss in front of someone else's parents."

Some parents are not as cool and open as mine, so when that first "shit" leaves my mouth, I get a glance from my best friend and I realize I've already messed up.

10. "Real friends want to build you up, not bring you down."

I've known this for a while, but hearing my best friend tell me while pointing out crappy things other friends do to each other reminds me that real friends only want the best for you. Cut toxic friends out of your life.

11. "When you're feeling down, you need to get up and do something."

This usually means I'm being dragged out of bed to get food, which I'm never passing up the opportunity to eat and feel better.

12. "You're better than you think you are."

When I look in the mirror and hear those words, I realize that I put myself down way too often and don't give myself enough credit.

13. "You cannot wear heels or open-toed shoes to The Strip."

Where was this advice my freshman year when I need it most? The most crucial life advice ever.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
