For the past two years, I’ve worked as a caretaker for 1 to 2-year-olds. Before that, I used to babysit in high school, and before that, I pet sat all the neighborhood pets that I could.
Children need constant attention, fed regularly, naps often, and cry randomly. And I've come to realize we're all basically more complex toddlers just trying to survive. Here’s a list of some of the few reasons:1. We have no idea what's going on.
Everyone is just telling us what to do and where to go and we
2. We make a mess.
Our dorms are a mess. Our hair is a mess. We don't like cleaning.
3. We rock questionable fashion choices.
I've seen children in tutus and crocs. I've seen college students in unicorn onesies
and crocs. Whatever's comfortable.
4. We nap all the time.
Just woke up? Nap. Mid-afternoon? Nap. 6 o’clock at night? Nap. All times are great times for sleeping.
5. We never stop eating.
Pretzels, chips, ice cream, nuggets- you name it, we want it.
6. We love to cuddle.
For some reason, college students have no sense of personal space.
7. We miss our moms.
Some kids can’t last even an hour without seeing their parents. We’ve all been there. Maybe we don’t cry every time we say goodbye, but we honestly think about our moms just as much as the next 2-year-old.
8. We are tougher than we think.
I have seen tiny children smack their heads on (carpeted) concrete and just get up and keep playing without a tear or bruise. We are much more capable than we think we are.
9. We cry a lot.
Mostly over things that don’t matter.
10. We keep going.
We make new friends. We forgive and forget. We push through all the crap and continue on.
College is supposed to prepare us for life as an adult- and that is terrifying. College is about figuring out who you are and how you fit into the world- no wonder we're all wandering around aimlessly in onesies calling our moms all the time.
Stay a kid for as long as you can.
