Life Has No Filter

The charming facade of social media.

Life Has No Filter

We all have those people on social media that when you scroll through their feed, you look and think "Wow, their life is perfect." However, someone's social media account isn't always an accurate depiction of their everyday life. In our age of social media, it is easy to get caught up in it all. It's easy to get lost in trying to capture the perfect Instagram photo or tying to compose the funniest tweet. We work so hard to make our lives seem appealing and "perfect" over social media, when in reality it's one big facade. I love all of my accounts as much as the next person, but do you ever think what is behind someone's social media accounts?

It's easy to post a picture with the perfect filter and adorable caption and watch the likes pour in. However it is not easy to share with the world what is actually going on in your life. You always see engagements, salon fresh hair cuts, candid photos and kissing selfies, which are all perfectly fine, but we have become so dependent on hiding behind our social media. No one ever posts about the terrible day they had. No one ever posts a picture of themselves sobbing over heartbreak or a status about their ongoing depression. You see what people want you to see.

It always appears as though the people on your multiple feeds have the ideal life, but isn't that what we are all trying to portray? Chances are all of those people you admire via Facebook and Instagram have bad days just like you! Instead of always trying to create this hyped up versions of ourselves online, why not try a dash of realism? Post it like it is, even if it isn't the most glorious picture, or the most positive tweet, but there is something genuine about expressing your true self. I can't help but think that's why we have all become so wrapped up in all of these internet sensations, because they let us show the world our perfect versions of ourselves.

Life can be hard, and everyone struggles and falls down sometimes. But there is beauty in realness. There is beauty in expressing it. When life doesn't look the way you want it to, you can't just throw Valencia or Slumber on it to make it prettier, life does not have a character limit, and you can't just press delete when you mess everything up. I don't know when everyone became so obsessed with trying to impress the world and less focused on being real. We are so used to being able to "edit" our lives online, but in real life you are stuck with the cards you are dealt and there is nothing you can do to change it.

I'm not suggesting social media becomes your diary, because we all know those people, and they are the worst. But I feel as though there is a balance between sunset and candid laughing pictures and serious things. Don't be afraid to show the word a glimpse of what happens when you put the camera away, because everyone has those moments, they've just become accustomed to hiding them.

Social media is revolutionary, and I'm not trying to bash it; I'm a huge fan. What I am not a fan of is the facade that social media allows us to put on. There is more to life than social media, and their is more to people's lives than they show on social media. Be raw, be real, and be original, and stop defining your self worth by the number of likes you get. Life has no filter, make your accounts a reflection of your true self.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
