13 Life Hacks Every Girl Needs To Know

Sometimes it can be difficult being a girl. There are so many things that don't go as planned, and it can be annoying when small things affect your day. That is why I put together this list of helpful life hacks. And the best part? They actually work! So here we go; tips and tricks that will save you time, money, and aggravation.

1. The vast purposes of Vaseline.

Vaseline, famous for its skin-healing abilities, can be used for more than just skin repair. Instead of spending extra money on expensive lip balms and lip scrubs, go out and buy a $3 jar of Vaseline and apply some to your lips as a chapstick. And speaking of makeup, you can even use Vaseline and water to take your makeup off at the end of the day instead of spending $10 on makeup wipes.

2. Old mascara? No problem!

Makeup can be expensive, and no one really wants to go out and spend $10 on a new mascara. Adding a few drops of Visine or contact solution into your dried-out mascara will extend its life for a while longer until that next paycheck comes in!

3. Don't throw away old containers!

I'm sure I'm not the only girl that loses bobby pins and hair elastics on a daily basis. They just completely disappear! However, as silly as it may seem, used up Tic Tac and Q-tip containers are the perfect way to store these pesky, easy-to-lose products.

4. Using playlists as a timer.

If you are not good at time management, making a playlist is a great way to pace yourself in the morning. Say it takes you about 20 minutes to get ready in the morning: make a playlist on your phone of songs that fills up the timeframe and play it while you're getting ready in the morning. This way, as soon as that last song approaches, you know it is time to wrap up what you're doing and get ready to leave. Not only is it easy, it makes getting ready much more fun!

5. Bad hair day?

Believe it or not, dryer sheets are great for frizzy hair. This common household object takes away frizz so easily, and it leaves your hair smelling nice and fresh, too.

6. Ironing clothes in your dorm room.

Most of my friends at school don't own any type of clothing iron, and putting your clothes in the dryer is not always the quickest solution to get wrinkles out of your clothing. If you're in a hurry and need an easy solution to this problem, turn on your straightener and use it to iron out the wrinkles in your clothes.

7. Use tape to keep track of your things.

College is a place of sharing and large gatherings with friends; it can be hard to keep track of what is yours. In order to prevent people from swapping notebooks, phone chargers, cups, clothes, etc., use washi tape or some sort of marking to ensure that your things will not be misplaced or stolen.

8. Speeding up the process of drying your nails.

Time is of the essence in college, and sometimes painting your nails is too time-consuming. One way to quicken the process of painting your nails is by placing each of your hands into a bowl of cold water. Place them in the bowl for about three minutes and your nails will be ready to go.

9. Nail polish isn't just for nails.

If you have a bottle of clear nail polish, it is handy to keep in your purse when you're on the go. It works perfectly if you get a run in your tights. But my favorite use for nail polish has to do with the organizational aspect of my life. There are so many keys on my key ring, so to keep track of which key serves what purpose I assign a different color to each key so I know right away what I am looking for. No more rifling through your purse looking for your house key!

10. Hard-to-open containers.

I know I'm not the only one to have struggled while opening a plastic water bottle or a bottle of nail polish. If you also have this problem, find a rubber band or a hair elastic and wrap it around the cap before trying to twist the cap off. For larger things like a mustard or a pickle jar you could even use something like rubber gloves.

11. No heating pad? No problem?

We all know what I'm talking about, ladies! I don't know about you, but when that time of the month rolls around, I am so lazy and all I want to do is stay warm under the covers. However, heating pads and blankets can be a bit pricey. If you find yourself in a similar situation, grab your laptop and place it on your stomach. Laptops actually get really warm, and it gives you a good excuse to watch Netflix all day, too.

12. Sweater pills.

There's nothing more upsetting than seeing a sweater become pill-y and dirty looking. There are tools made specifically to remove them, but going over your sweater with a simple razor will do the trick just as well.

13. New shoes too tight?

If you recently bought a pair of shoes, but they're still a bit stiff, put on a pair of thick socks with your new shoes and blow dry any of the areas that are too tight. This will loosen them up, and they will break in much faster.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
