It was 3:45 and I had five minutes to get to work. I quickly sped into the 7/11 parking lot and hopped out, not even bothering to lock my car. As I raced around the aisles searching for the energy drink I promised a co-worker I'd pick up, a sign caught my attention: Powerball reaches 900 million. I didn't think much of it at the time but soon I found myself at the counter speaking the unforgettable words: "one ticket for Powerball, please."
As I passed through the days to come, I found myself daydreaming about what I would do if I won. Of course, I knew my chances were slim to none. I had one ticket and experts say its a 1 in 292.2 million chance...I'm definitely not that lucky.
And spoiler alert, I wasn't. But hey, no one else was either. So with the jackpot over 1.3 billion now, my mind can't help but run in a million and one directions. So what could you buy if you won?
According to romper.com:
1. Over 65 million tickets to the latest Starwars movie—hey, maybe the force was really with you
2. 1.3 billion cans of beans- not sure why you would, but hey, to each his own
According to Forbes:
1. A venti Starbucks coffee or chic-fil-a sandwich for every American
2. 20.8 million bottles of patron silver, enough to fill 6.3 Olympic-sized pools—not sure I really wanna swim in tequila but still pretty cool
3. A year of Direct TV for every household in Tennessee
According to khou.com:
1. Jerry Seinfeld could perform for you every single day for nearly 30 months straight
2. 1.6 million of the world's most expensive burgers
3. Buy at least half of the Saint Louis Rams
According to cnn.com:
1. 1/11th of the tv rights in the NCAA March Madness
2. 600 Bugatti Veyrons—Ace Hood sure would love that
Ok, while all of these things are great, I don't see myself blowing all my money on some people in Tennessee. And I bet most people would agree. So really, what should you buy with your money? Most people would argue they would pay off all their loans, either from their respective universities or credit cards. Going along with that, the next step would be to buy their parents a house. Totally respectable, but after that is when the shenanigans would kick in.
After talking to many of my friends and co-workers, I got the same responses: "I'd buy and renovate an Italian villa where me and my husband Johnny Depp would reside", "a beach house", "a winning New York sports team." And the list goes on and on. I can't deny it, I had my head in the clouds as well, dreaming of tropical islands and a lifestyle that would make Kate Middleton jealous. So maybe extravagant spending isn't the way to go.
Syracuse sophomore Mikayla Lehman was only one of a few people with herself grounded at the thought of such money. "I would invest," she said. "I wouldn't buy anything too excessive since I would prefer to always be wealthy instead of blowing it all and ending up more poor than I am now." And she's right, many of the winners who take a lump sum payment end up a bust. The fame gets to them and they end up selling their numerous homes in a Nicholas Cage manner.
So in the end, there's probably no one correct way to spend the money. Sure some options are better than others, but it all comes down to personal preference. But honestly, 99.9% of us will never have to make those life changing decisions. Honestly, though, just take a chance, buy a ticket, you never really do know. Though #sorrynotsorry in advance if you win a mere $4 or nothing at all, happens to the best of us...more times then I'd like to admit. So dear friends, may the odds be ever in your favor, but hopefully not more than in my own.
