Lies High School Teachers Tell Us Before College

Our teachers made it seem like high school was a piece of cake...wrong!

Element 5

The four years I spent in high school were simply just four years of being told how rough college was going to be. As if spending eight or more consistent and mandatory hours with limited time to complete homework wasn't bad enough. Now that I have finally entered college, I have realized that every single thing my high school teachers told me about college...was a lie. Here are the top ten lies my high school teachers told me.

1. Your Professors Won't Be Lenient With You.

If you email them or go to their office hours, they will more than likely help you out.

2. They Won't Let You In Class If You Are Late.

If class starts at 10:00 am, the majority of people start walking in at 10:05 am. Professors aren't as strict about time as our high school teachers made it seem like. The doors rarely lock, and if they do, the professor normally lets you in.

3. Late Work Is Not Accepted.

I could turn my paper in a few days after the deadline and it would hardly be docked down a single letter grade. Some professors may not accept late work, but they normally inform you about it first. High school teachers made us think we would never be able to turn a single thing in late.

4. They Are Strict With Attendance.

Most times, the professors don't even want to be there. And most times you get let out early. Attendance is on you.

5. They Will Treat You As If They Are Superior.

My professors tell me to call them by their first name, actually.

6. They Won't Remind You About Assignments.

The professors I've had mention assignments and deadlines at least 3 times in class--every class.

7. You Will Have More Homework In College Than High School.

*Correction* You will have more READING in college, but you are given ample amount of time to complete it, unlike in high school where you are trapped in a building for 8-9 consistent hours of the day; probably have a job; required to do extra curricular activities; and technically only given 2 hours to complete the shit. Then you need 7-8 hours of sleep in order to wake up at 6:30 am.

8. No Curving Up.

Pretty much every exam I have taken has had some sort of curve. Not to mention, professors tend to be very chill about rounding up your grades.

9. The Chewing Gum/Food Rule.

High school teachers were so hard on us about chewing gum or having food in the classroom, but professors don't care.

10. Leaving The Classroom Is Not Allowed.

You can literally walk out and no one will bat an eye. If you have to pee, you go pee. If you want to go back and sleep, you just walk out. Just don't disrupt the class and you are fine.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
