On November 8th, 2016, it was the day of the US presidential election. After that day, Donald Trump was chosen by the electoral college to become the next president of the US. Although I do not agree with him on many issues, I recognize that he is the president. I recognize that his words have the power to affect not only Americans, but how other nations perceive America and its values.
And with that said, I have only one message for Donald Trump: think about America.
Please, Mr. Trump, think about America when you send out tweets criticizing talk show hosts and media outlets that occasionally publish articles against you. Think about America when you say vulgar things about women. Think about America when you send out your tweets.
You are a world leader now, of a country with a vast national presence and great power. America is supposed to be the pinnacle of liberty and freedom. But, how can we be that pinnacle if our own president constantly condemns various media outlets as "fake news"? How can we preach values such as free speech when our very own president criticizes news outlets that run negative stories against him?
How can we pride ourselves as a country that fights for and respects all people, when the White House has refused to even recognize LGBT pride month? When the president criticizes a female news host by using vulgarity?
When President Trump tweets, his words not only reach Americans. They reach all of his followers from other countries. They reach world leaders who lead countries with which America is an ally. Tell me, how can other countries take America seriously when our president tweets in the manner in which he does? Is America's reputation not at stake?
This is not even about differences in ideology. Regardless of whether or not we believe in and support different issues, at the end of the day, we are American. Shouldn't it be a matter of concern how the president carries himself on the world stage?
Are class and sophistication now considered partisan issues? Is that really where we have come?
Please, Mr. President, think about America.
