As some of you may have seen, there has been a new addition to the LGBTQ+ flag. There are now two more stripes: black and brown. The intention of this was to acknowledge the people of color that are part of the LGBTQ+ community. This new flag was introduced in Philidelphia, PA.
The original LGBTQ+ flag was created in 1978 and has become a symbol for the community. The timing of the change to the flag could not be planned any better since this month is gay pride month.
Time for my own personal opinion: I don't think that adding those two stripes is a good idea. It is changing something that has been around for a long time and essentially tweaking the community. They are making it seem like race is another division and that someone of color is different than someone who is not of color. I do not believe that your sexuality has anything to do with the color of your skin.
I am a member of various LGBTQ+ groups on Facebook, and it seems like there is a vast majority of people who do not agree with the change in the flag. I think there is something to be said when the change in the flag is supposed to bring the community together more but instead ends up creating another divide in the community: those who support the change in the flag and those who don't.
It has also been said in one of the Facebook groups that they do not feel as if Philidelphia should be able to decide what the LGBTQ+ flag is for everyone when they are just one city that has a small fraction of the community. I feel as if the community should decide if they want to implement this new change into the community.
I think it will be interesting to see if this is something that actually sticks or if people will just resort back to the original flag.
I understand that this is a controversial topic, so let me know - what are your thoughts on this? Do you think that the flag should remain how it is or do you think that the attempt to create a more diverse community is a good thing?
