A Letter To My Future Little

Dear Future Little,

You don’t know me yet but I have been waiting to meet you since I ran home to my sorority on bid day and soon enough you will be running home to me! I may meet you on bid day, or maybe I will meet you a little after but I will be sure to hold onto you because you sure are one of a kind.

You may be nervous for the unknown. You are a freshman and will begin a very different lifestyle. Remember though that I was you once upon a time. I didn’t know what to expect from sorority life, classes, friends, living on my own, being away from my family, and the experiences which college opens up. I was in your shoes a year ago and that is why you are my Little. College is terrifying. It’s an adjustment and it will take time before you fully settle in, but I want you to know that I want to help you adjust. I will happily help you find your classes, eat lunch or dinner with you whenever you need me to, bring you to Target when you need to pick up clothes hangers, and bring you medicine when you can’t get out of bed.

I want you to know that I will be here for you through literally everything. Boyfriend broke up with you? No worries I will bring you ice cream and cry with you all night. Missing home dearly? Although home can never be replaced, I will try to make you feel as at home as possible. Feeling a little sick? I will drive you to the doctor. Stuck in a sticky situation? Call me and I will be there in a heartbeat.

I promise I will be whatever you need me to be on your good and bad days. I will be your mom when you need a ride somewhere, your friend when you need someone to laugh with, your support system when you need some comforting, and your intimidating big sister when someone hurts you. I want to be everything and more. I will be there to answer your questions, and when I don’t know the answer I will be sure to come up with some hilarious response that will make you smile.

However, as I promise to fully commit to you, you need to promise me something. Promise me that you will never feel like you cannot talk to me. Promise me that you will call me when you are alone and feeling vulnerable. Promise me that you will not hesitate to cry on my shoulder. I am here to be your guidance throughout this incredibly hectic time in your life and remember that I chose to be your Big, no one is forcing me to do this. I want to take care of you because you are now my family and another thing that will put a smile on my face.

You may not know this yet but this sisterhood that you are entering is going to have such an impact on you. You are going to be surrounded by hundreds of new strangers and they will all fall in love with you. I cannot wait for you to experience all that this sorority has given me this past year. My excitement cannot be contained anymore and I smile thinking about finding you! You may meet many people throughout life but always remember your Biggie when you become famous.

For now I hope you have a fabulous recruitment with minimal stress. You will find me somewhere along the way so get excited!

Love Always,

Your Future Big

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
