I am not a politician, a professional writer, or political analyst. I am, however, a college student with what I believe to be a strong moral compass and right now, my moral compass is screaming out in anger and disbelief over Trump's transgender military ban. So, like I always do in times of distress and disbelief, I write letters. Here is a letter to all transgender people.
To the incredibly brave transgender people in the world,
You all are so brave and courageous, and if I ever gain an ounce of that courageousness and bravery, I will be set for life. You all have faced so many obstacles just to be who you truly are, and that is beyond stupid and ridiculous; no one should have to face an obstacle just to be the person they are.
I want you to know that I stand with you. I will vote, I will sign petitions, I will speak out because I know that this is not okay. I also want you to know that while you believe your government has betrayed you, not everyone sides with He Who Must Not Be Named. In fact, the Pentagon has stated that they will not support this ban on transgenders in the military and will take no steps to enforce this ban.
You also have the support of United States Representative Joe Kennedy III, the grandson of Bobby Kennedy (John F. Kennedy's brother). He delivered a poignant, masterfully crafted speech about this ban. He sits on as chairman of the Congressional Transgender Equality Taskforce; he has your backs.
I have your backs. The 64,000+ people who have signed a petition to stop the ban have your backs. Senator Elizabeth Warren has your back. Senator Ed Markey has your back. So many senators and representatives support you and have your backs; the people who have the power to change this and make this right have your backs.
"Our president has told thousands of American soldiers that they will fight for us, but we will not fight for them. That their deeply personal medical decisions are somehow the public's business. That although they are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect our freedom, we will not offer them the most basic freedom in return.
The President of the United States looked American soldiers in the eye and dared to question their patriotism, their courage. He doubted their commitment to their brothers and sisters in uniform, he said that our military couldn't or wouldn't stand for all of us. You deserve better from your president. You deserve better from your government. You deserve better from your country."
Please don't give up on us; please don't give up on your country. Stand strong, like you always have, and remain brave. I will see you through.
With love and support,
A friend
